An Historical Guild Of The Late
Bishop Christopher C. Owens As Previously Stated,
The Late Bishop C. C. Owens founded and organized the Religious Workers Guild, Inc. in 1957, and was the creator of the (created during the lifetime of Bishop Mason, and was the highest award presented in the Church Of God In Christ, Inc.), The "Citation Of Special Commendation", and other awards. He was appointed National President of the Guild on December 11, 1959, by the late Bishop C. H. Mason during the General Assembly of the Church Of God In Christ, in Memphis, TN. Bishop Owens Has The Distinction Of Being The Last Preacher To Receive A National Appointment Personally By Bishop Charles Harrison Mason Before Mason's Demise.
The Religious Workers Guild, Inc. was the first to give National Awards in the Church Of God In Christ since the Guild's inception many years ago. Bishop Owens was recognized in the 1976/77 issue of "Men of Achievement" in the Library of Congress, in Washington, DC. Bishop Owens was also a world traveler and lifetime member of the NAACP. On occasion, Bishop Owens was likened to Napoleon because of his small stature, but unlike Napoleon, he was confident in himself and with his abilities without being arrogant. True, there were men who may have had a physical height advantage over Bishop Owens, but when it came to possessing integrity, demonstrating God's anointing, exercising intelligence, and effectively presenting information without appearing obnoxious or self contained, many "physically taller" men could not reflect half of the man's stature! He was genuinely concerned about the welfare of others and naturally empathetic, which was an asset to his ministry. The fact that the late Bishop C. C. Owens had traveled a sometimes bumpy and lonely road, he was sensitive to the needs of his fellow man.
Below, The Late Bishop Owens is seen again receiving his reappointment for The National President Of The Religious Workers Guild, Inc. from the National Officials of The Church of God In Christ, Inc.

Pictured Above To Celebrate Its 20th Anniversary (As An Affiliate Of The National C. O. G. I. C.: 1959 - 1979), The Religious Workers Guild Presented Dr. C. C. Owens With The "Charles Harrison Mason Award" - The Highest Award. The Guild Held Its 20th Anniversary Awards Dinner At The Ramada Inn Central, In Memphis, Tennessee, Nov. 12th 1979 During The Church's 72nd Holy Convocation. Photo left To Right: Dr. C. J. Jones, Regional Director, Fortworth, Texas, Dr. C. C. Owens, Dr. Charles Smith, Jr., Vice President Of Guild, Seattle, Washington, Bishop Isaiah Roberts, Prominent Pastor Of Roberts Temple In Chicago and Bishop Of Northern Illinois Jurisdiction (At That Time), Made The Presentation.
Bishop Isaiah Roberts, As Seen To The Right Of Bishop E. Lenox Above, Had Just Received An Award From The Religious Workers Guild By The National President Of The Guild - Bishop C. C. Owens.
Bishop Isaiah Roberts Was The Son Of Bishop W. M. Roberts. Bishop W. M. Roberts Was One Of The Early Pioneers Of The Church Of God In Christ. He Was Invited To Come To Chicago For The Purpose Of Starting A Mission By A Group Of Women: They Were Sis. Lillian Brooks (Later Coffey), Sis. Anna Davis, Sis. Mary Duncan (Later Davis), Sis. Mary Pierce, Sis Olina Lerge & Others (13 Women In All) - At The Time, There Was No COGIC In Chicago. Bishop Roberts had served under Bishop C. H. Mason in Memphis, Tennessee prior to 1916; Certainly Mother Coffey had communicated with Bishop Mason requesting that he send a preacher to Chicago (preferably Elder W. M. Roberts) since several pastors had abandoned the mission, for they had said that it was impossible to plant a holiness church in such a rebellious and wicked city as Chicago. Bishop Roberts Accepted The Offer And Brought His Son Isaiah Roberts (1 Out Of 10 Children) With Him, And Later In 1917, Accompanied By His Wife And 9 More Children, Moved To Chicago And Established A Ministry; So, it would be safe to say that the prayer band which was organized by Mother Lillian Brooks Coffey became the first Church of God in Christ in Chicago. After Moving His Missions Twice (31st & LaSalle and 37th & Federal), In 1925 Bishop W. M. Roberts acquired two lots at 40th & State and Roberts Moved His Congregation To 40th And State Where He Built A Church From The Ground - "Roberts Temple COGIC". Bishop W. M. Roberts Saved Souls, And Promulgated The Gospel Throughout The Region. As A Matter Of Fact, Roberts Temple, Located At 40th & State, Was The First COGIC Church In Illinois, The First Denomination In Illinois To Broadcast On The Radio And The First Church In Chicago From Which Dr. Owens Preached In 1944. Bishop Roberts served as overseer of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Iowa, Arkansas Minnesota, Nebraska and Wisconsin. Many preachers who gained prominence in the ministry "sat at his feet." Some were elders: Carey White who joined him in Chicago from Memphis, Bishop O. M. Kelly, Bishop F. G. Green, Bishop E. E. Lenox, Bishop Cain Scott, and Bishop J. O. Mason.
The names of his children were: Callie, Minnie Pearl, Mamie, Gertrude, Isaiah, Willie, Ruth Naomi, Carrie, John Paul, and Robert. During the Women's Convention under the presidency of Mother Lillian Brooks Coffey, Bishop W. M. Roberts, again surrounded by praying women (the previously mentioned group), slipped away home to be with the Lord.
Pictured Below Is A Photo Of Bishop William Matthew Roberts, The Father Of Bishop Isaiah Roberts. Bishop W. M. Roberts took all of he and his wife's savings of only $100, and, with the leading of the Lord, used the money to bail Bishop Mason out of jail. Bishop W. M. Roberts Was Also Among The First Five Overseers Of The COGIC To Be Consecrated To The Office Of The Bishopric In 1933.

The Religious Workers Guild was cognizant of the fact that it is important to offer support to God's people in every facet of life; It was the saints who played a major role in fighting for a political breakthrough which ushered Dorothy Brown into this office. There is a vast need for reform and excellence in the political arena; We pray that God will bless humanity and continue to allow the Religious Workers Guild to seek deserving workers in the religious and social vineyard and to serve as a continual supporter and promoter of excellence.
