Bishop Christopher C. & Evangelist Elvie J. Owens This couple lived by Joshua's famous words: "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord!" As a visionary and a dynamic man of God, the Late Bishop Owens was dedicated to upholding and faithfully adhering to God's statutes. Because of the fact that Bishop loved snapping and organizing pictures and scrapbooks, making tapes of his messages and watching videos, this page along with this scrapbook oriented website, is posthumously dedicated to him. These are videos of the great Elder S. E. Mitchell; There was a write - up about him in the New York Medical Journal. He died in the hospital from a burst appendix; He had refused to have surgery for appendicitis, and as a result, had been rushed to the hospital at the last minute. Some of his preacher friends had gone to the hospital with him. After he had been pronounced dead for 15 minutes, his wife came into the room and began to pray loudly: asking God why did this happen; that he had not finished his work and commanded her husband to immediately come back to life; By this time the room was crowded with his preacher friends, some doctors and nurses - and they were trying to get this "crazy" woman out of the room. But she refused to stop praying and commanded him to open his eyes. Thinking that she was hysterical, the doctors and nurses were trying to clear the room, maintain some semblance of order, and to calm his wife. But she refused to stop praying and continued to plead for his life - reminding God of some of his promises, and that her husband's mission and ministry here on earth was not over! After this 3rd time, her dead husband, of now almost 20 minutes, opened his eyes and green poisonous mucous began spewing out of his mouth. By now the nurses and the doctors began screaming and there was complete pandemonium in the room. Elder Mitchell Had Come Alive Again!! As things settled, the doctors said that he would be a vegetable for the rest of his life - having complete brain damage because he had been without oxygen to the brain for such a long period of time. In addition, the doctors emphasized that Elder Mitchell would never walk or talk again, making it specifically clear that this hardship would be due to him having total brain damage. His wife didn't accept the doctors reports! She believed in God's promises. She accepted God's report. And so, his wife kept praying and coming to the hospital day in and day out, constantly ministering to her husband (about the same time each day) - until one day, as he heard her footsteps coming towards his door, he slowly walked (with a major limp) to the door meeting his wife - she vigorously shouted, giving God Almighty the praise! Then the medical doctors said that he would certainly never talk again! But he did talk again, without loosing his wit and famed knowledge of the Bible scriptures, as you will notice in the prescribed You Tube listings. Realizing that they were wrong on every prediction, they had to analyze the facts and conclude that there was no medical explanation for these astonishing events and had to refer to Elder Mitchell's complete recovery, which was conflicting all medical knowledge, as a Miracle from God Almighty! Several of the nurses and doctors who had witnessed this amazing course of events were saved as a result of this Miracle! Although Elder Mitchell now walked with a slight limp, he walked with a cane and was a suave and debonair dresser; He continued his preaching ministry for another 15 years before leaving this earth! There was absolutely nothing wrong with his brain, for he was a fast and shrewd thinker, never at a loss for words, quoting scriptures almost verbatim. Enjoy his videos! Throughout the years, Sunday School had helped Mother Rivers to grow in the knowledge of God and His Word. It was through Sunday School that she was taught to love and fear God. At the tender age of nine she began assisting in teaching Sunday School classes. Her love for Sunday School taught her to love God, which eventually led her to give her life to Christ at the age of eleven. After giving her life to God, her love for Sunday School grew stronger and stronger, and to this day she is a student of the Officer's Class at her local church. Because of this love, she has developed a Christ-centered message to eagerly share with others wherever she goes, whether it is at church, on the radio, or in the prisons.
Sunday School is a vital part of our Christian walk, and its teaching can be used as a catalyst to better equip us as ministers, missionaries, auxiliary members, and future leaders of our church and world ministries. Mother Rivers encourages Sunday School scholars everywhere to recruit others in your communities by inviting them to attend classes with you. Not only will this help to build your local congregations, it will help to create better home environments and safer communities.
Bishop & Mrs. Roy L. H. Winbush
Bishop and Mrs. Winbush have served the Church of God in Christ as editors in chief of the COGIC Sunday School Curriculum for over 40 years. Bishop and Mrs. Winbush, as well as family and church members, grew into an editorial committee that produced curriculum materials that were used across the length and breadth of the Church of God in Christ.
Bishop Winbush has been a Sunday School student or teacher for his entire Christian life. In the rural South, during the days of segregation, the spiritual guidance of the local church Sunday School teachers and senior saints encouraged him and countless others to achieve great feats for God. Biblical education and the anointing of the Holy Ghost helped him and others develop spiritual qualities that never died.
The Winbush's devotion epitomized their enormous wealth of generosity and provided tools for the education of the saints. As Bishop Winbush said, "We support the COGIC Publishing House's endeavor to get the literature into churches, homes, and places around the world. Truly, my hope is in the legacy of future Saints educating, training, and saving the world for Christ."

Excerpts Of History The Torch Is Passed And The Legacy Preserved
Bishop Charles Harrison Mason's legacy has been preserved through his successors. Upon the passing of our revered leader, Bishop C. H. Mason, a seven member executive commission took charge -- Bishops: J. O. Patterson, Sr., A. B. McEwen, J. S. Bailey, O. M. Kelly, S. M. Crouch, U. E. Miller, and O. T. Jones, Sr. -- until the election of 1962. Bishop O. T. Jones, Sr. was unanimously elected Senior Bishop and remained until 1965 (technically until 1968 before a change was made). In 1965 the issue of having authority similar to the full authority of Bishop Mason became an extremely thorny issue for the leadership of the Church Of God In Christ. {Later, surf to the Historic Reflections Page ~ under The Bishop O. In January of 1968, the Constitutional Convention convened and abolished the office of Senior Bishop and the executive board or {Commissioners or Executive Commission}. New guidelines were established for a new office called Presiding Bishop, which is an election position for a four year term. In November 1968, General Secretary Bishop J. O. Patterson, Sr. was elected the first Presiding Bishop of the Church Of God In Christ.
Our Chief Apostle, Bishop Charles Harrison Mason, was succeeded by men of vision with hearts for God and A passion for people. From this reformation, the General Board emerged as the new leadership structure for the Executive Branch of the church.
The impact and influence of COGIC is global, and as we enter the second decade of the 21st century, we bring with it the very essence and mark of the original vision of our Founder and Chief Apostle, Bishop C. H. Mason, and it continues to be the tree from which COGIC ministries continue to branch. It is the unique polity of COGIC'S organizational structure that gives local churches the freedom and authority to exercise their creativity in ministry.
Bishop Charles E. Blake Sr. and the current General Board have taken the Church Of God In Christ to an even greater place in Christendom. We are now known as "global" and "international", which in the past were words not used for COGIC.
